Indian dancing is thousands of years old. It’s said that a wise man called Bharata Muni was inspired by God to write down 108 Karanas or dance exercises. Learning these would enable everyone to become perfect in everything they did. Those who could dance, and others could achieve perfection by watching the dancers. The dance exercises, or Adavus, which pupils learn today are based on those original 108 Karanas. Indian dance is a form of yoga, originally a material art, based on keeping the mind and body so fit that nothing could attack it. It is defensive not offensive.

It builds new combinations in the brain, thereby utilising much more brain-power. It therefore gives very fast reactions and improves co-ordination, defusing strain and stress and improving well-being. Even for those who have no wish to become dancers, the effects of a few lessons will last for years to come and it is believed that the patterns formed by the Adavus (dance exercises) have an effect on natural things so that by changing them (e.g. via astrology) they help to create harmony and peace.
