OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathy is an approach to healthcare that emphasises the role of the musculoskeletal system in health and disease and the belief that the body works as a unit with structure and function interrelated.

In most countries, osteopathy is a form of complementary medicine, emphasising a holistic approach and the skilled use of a range of manual and physical treatment interventions in the prevention and treatment of disease. In practice, this most commonly relates to musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain. Osteopathic principles teach that treatment of the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles and joints) facilitates the recuperative powers of the body.

Osteopathy can help with pain relief in all these areas: headaches; whiplash injuries; frozen or stiff shoulders; tennis elbow; wrist and hand pain; hip, thigh, and knee problems; postural problems; calf, shin, ankle, and foot pain; sports injuries, stiff neck, trapped nerves, arm pain; asthma and breathing trouble; lower back pain; slipped disc; leg pain; back pain in pregnancy; pain and stiffness associated with arthritis.

IAN SCHOFIELD

Bsc. (Ost), Registered Osteopath

Ian Schofield has specialised in treating dancers since 1987 in his small practice at Pineapple Studios.

Because of the wide variety of dance taught at Pineapple, Ian comes into regular contact with an incredible array of conditions associated with all the different styles.

Ian explains a bit more about his work, 'Dancers are often susceptible to injury. My role as a professional is to diagnose the tissue causing pain, understand why the tissue is in trouble, and then devise a plan firstly to relieve symptoms and secondly to prevent the injury reoccurring.'

He deals with professional dancers, singers, actors and other creative performers and is primarily interested in restoring balance in the function of the performer's body.

As an Osteopath he is trained in understanding all the joints and muscles of the body, and has a detailed knowledge of anatomy.
